This Sunday, June 15, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook the area of Lima and Callao in Peru, causing concern among the population. According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), the epicenter was located about 30 kilometers southwest of Callao, at a depth of 49 kilometers, and the tremor occurred around 11:35 in the morning.

The movement felt strongly in several districts of Lima and Callao, which led many people to quickly leave their homes, offices and shopping centers. In social networks, users shared videos where lamps were seen moving, glass falling and people in the streets, showing the scare that caused the earthquake, especially because it took many by surprise in the middle of the father’s day.

As for material damage, detachments and falls of objects were reported in places such as the Plaza Norte Shopping Center, where part of the ceiling suffered damage and some products fell. There were also cracks in homes and schools, and landslides on the Costa Verde, particularly in Chorrillos, which complicated traffic in that area. In San Martín de Porres, a vehicle was destroyed after the fall of blocks of a building under construction, and at the Balta del Metropolitano station in Barranco, parts of the false roof fell.

Unfortunately, the earthquake left a deadly victim. Jonathan Teófilo Ventura Vega, a 36 -year -old motorcycle taxi driver, died in the Independence District when a building wall collapsed over him while waiting for a passenger. The news was confirmed by the National Police, which also called on the population to reinforce prevention measures and participate in emergency drills.

Several of those affected shared their experiences, reflecting the fear they felt. A neighbor of Callao said that «it was very strong, it looked like an earthquake. The walls creaked and it seemed that everything was going to fall.» At the Jorge Chávez airport, in the city of Callao, passengers and workers also lived moments of tension when they felt the tremor. In social networks, concern and support messages were felt quickly.

The emergency authorities acted quickly to evaluate the situation and ensure the tranquility of Peruvians. The Navy ruled out any risk of Tsunami, which helped to calm the spirits after some initial rumors. Civil Defense and the Police inspected the affected areas and were attentive to possible replicas, which were effectively presented minutes later, although with less intensity. Health services in Lima remained on alert to attend any eventuality.

Peru, like Colombia, is in a highly seismic area, part of the Pacific Fire belt, where most world seismic activity occurs.
